Juvenile fantasy is pretty big in Japan, and with over 530,000 copies sold, “Colorful” is probably one of the biggest of them all. The title alludes to the notion of “diversity” and the story revolves around a character who passes on to the other side, only to be told by an angel, “Congratulations, you have won the lottery!” and is then promptly ushered into the body of some stranger back on earth. This stranger turns out to be a teenager leading such a rock-bottom life that Tom Waits, in one of his raspy, bourbon moods, would love writing a poem or two about. This is one book I certainly hope will get translated. Here’s a link to the official site of its movie adaptation.
